Balika’s Story

Freedom, Hope, Stories

Balika grew up in rural Murshidabad in a village not far from Freeset Sherpur. Her father was a farm laborer and her mother looked after the family.

Balika’s family arranged for her to get married when she was just 13 years old. Her husband was a farm laborer twice her age. Because his work was seasonal, his income was sporadic.

As a young bride, Balika didn’t know what to expect from her husband, so she endured it when she found out that he was an alcoholic. He did not treat her well, and often beat her.

She gave birth to a son when she was 15, and a daughter three years later.

With her husband’s irregular income, preference for alcohol, and lack of care for his family, Balika and her children often went hungry, sharing just one meal a day.

Two years ago, Balika’s husband climbed a tree near their house to pick coconuts in a drunken stupor. He fell out of the tree and died from his injuries.

When Balika told us of that day she said, “There was no peace when my husband was alive, but after his death, our future seemed even more desperate.”

A glimmer of hope unexpectedly appeared a few days later as Balika talked with Kundola, a friend from her village who worked for Freeset in Kolkata.

Kundola shared that there might be an opportunity for a fresh start for Balika at Freeset Sherpur, a Freeset business in rural Murshidabad, just down the road. A week later, Balika started at Freeset Sherpur.

She was thrilled to start her new job. Freeset Sherpur offered her a training stipend and a consistent income above the national minimum. Her children would no longer have to go hungry!

When she first started at Freeset Sherpur, Balika wasn’t confident that she’d have what it takes to learn to weave. She thought she might end up spinning or finishing instead.

Even the Freeset Sherpur team thought she might have a hard time weaving because she was small-framed and not very tall.

During training, Balika set her sights on becoming a weaver. She put all of her energy and concentration into learning and practicing her weaving skills.

Now Balika is one of Freeset Fabric’s best weavers!

She enjoys coming to work to weave and she loves the community-oriented atmosphere at Freeset Sherpur. Between working, chai breaks, and getting lunch with the other women, Balika describes Freeset Sherpur as a family.

When asked about her hopes for the future, Balika didn’t hesitate for a moment. Her biggest dream is for Freeset to grow so that more women from surrounding villages can be given the same opportunity that she had. She wants these women to see their lives, families, and communities flourish. Balika send a special message to people who are friends and supporters of Freeset.

“Now that I work for Freeset Sherpur, there is a better future for me and my family. I was lonely and sad before, but life looks very different now. Thank you!”

It’s Not About Me

Faith, Freedom, Hope, Movement

inam_bw (1)

That’s where it began…

It all started at a desk with a computer screen in the summer of 2008. At a job that was fulfilling but extremely draining, a calling for me, one to grow up, to mature in but also to show His love to a population that was riddled with confusion, sin, darkness, & ridiculed by society.

There was no privacy at this desk, conversations swarmed the area. Conversations swarmed my head. It was the battleground and many different spirits came and went.

I prayed daily for this space, for my work, for the people I came in contact with. I studied the word daily, this was my strength and peace and weapon when I was confronted with people, with the demands and with my own self.

I needed more, I needed simplicity, I needed Him. He wanted me there.

I found that acronyms worked in the midst of this chaos. First it was ….INOMB= it’s none of my business. Which worked for a while and people would pass by asking what INOMB meant. And I’d tell them.

But then I needed more! I needed to realize that each moment whether in that space or the space of my car, or later on my seat on the local bus, my home, my seat at church, or at a meeting. It’s not about me!

Which birthed INAM, it’s not about me….I wrote this on a green small sticky note under my computer screen. And stared at it frequently, day in and day out. I continued to pray, go to work, do the best I could according to His will for my life.

Then a year later He revealed to me, “Amanda you’re right, it’s not about you, it’s not about what you think you are not, what you think you should do or should know or should measure up to. It’s all about me. Yahweh. I died for you and every single person to know me. So place the cross that Jesus died on for you over what is NOT and KNOW that all you do, all you say is all about I AM. I gave Moses the words…the direction. I AM who I say I AM.

Therefore INAM with the cross over the N was birthed to bring glory to Him, Yahweh and all that He is. Period.

This was the beginning.

God said to Moses, ‘I AM who I AM.’ And He said, “Say this to the people of Israel: ‘I AM has sent me to you.’

It’s Not About Me is a nonprofit ministry to strengthen His body and to glorify His name Christ Jesus. We partner with organizations who also agree in this vision and are attempting to bring freedom to those who are still held captive. As it is stated ….

“The Spirit of the LORD God is upon me,

because the LORD has anointed me to bring good news to the poor;

he has sent me to bind up the broken-hearted,

to proclaim liberty-VICTORY to the captives,

and the opening of the prison to those who are bound;

to proclaim the year of the LORD’s favor,

and the day of vengeance of our God;

to comfort all who mourn;

to grant to those who mourn in Zion-

to give them a beautiful headdress instead of ashes,

the oil of gladness instead of mourning,

the garment of praise ; instead of a faint spirit;

that they may be called oaks of righteousness, the planting of the Lord, that he may be glorified.

They shall build up the ancient ruins; they shall raise up the former devastations;

they shall repair the ruined cities, the devastations of many generations.

Instead of your shame there shall be a double portion; instead of dishonor they shall rejoice in their lot; therefore in their land they shall possess a double portion; they shall have everlasting joy.”

Have you ever found a company or business that just takes your breath away or touches your heart?  Well Freeset did that for me and when I had learned about them from a sweet mentor – I knew I would come back to them when God said the time was right.

Freeset, believes “that people deserve to live in freedom. Freedom from oppression, freedom from poverty, and freedom from exploitation. Their mission is to help communities live a life of freedom as a Fair Trade non-profit.  Bringing freedom to communities in West Bengal, India and beyond through employment and education.”

I have been in contact with Freeset for several years, they probably thought this would never come to fruition either.  But God!

I am praying that the women who are creating these INAM keychains are spoken to through Jesus and His Holy Spirit.  That the Cross that He died on for each one of us will speak to just one woman.  That she will hear Him, feel Him and KNOW Him.  That she will accept Jesus as her Lord and savior and start a revolution right there!  She is an overcomer just like each one of us!  In Jesus name I lift her up to you YAHWEH, AMEN!
